Welcome Charity Knight!

We are excited to announce that Charity Knight is our new Director of Children’s Ministries! Read this letter that explains her heart behind taking on this role:

When the idea of taking on the role as the Children’s Director at Christ Community was presented to me, I immediately felt inadequate. I was thinking that someone else could do a much better job at filling Camille’s shoes than me. God has graciously given me a vision for our Children’s Worship time. He has also reminded me that he can use our inadequacies to pursue his purpose for his church.

Since taking on the responsibilities for our Children’s Ministry, God has used the skills that I have learned in my teaching career to help aid in the details of this role. I have really enjoyed thinking through our upcoming move to Athens with Aaron and Camille and what that will look like for the children and families in our church.  I am praying that the kids and their parents, whether current members or future visitors, will feel the love of the gospel through the nurturing of our workers, safety of the environment we provide, and our acceptance of diversity.

God’s PurposePsalm 78:1-8

My VisionDeuteronomy 6:4-9

The first part of my vision is that our children at Christ Community will grow up learning truth, loving God, and loving others. A challenging question for me is: “Could we create an environment so the children of Christ Community never even have a memory of when they didn’t hear about Jesus and his gospel?” So, whatever activities, lessons, or events we are doing with them, it models the gospel and conveys that the gospel is intricately connected to every part of our lives as believers. I pray our children will learn what love, sacrifice, freedom, grace, and generosity truly means, and in turn, through the gospel these truths will impact their lives in a very personal way. I pray our children can learn these things from their parents, children’s workers, and other believers in our church.

Another part of my vision is to see our children’s ministry grow in ways we cannot imagine. I am not sure what that means for us. I just know I am praying for growth and for God’s purpose for this ministry to transpire. I pray that our children acquire a missional perspective as they grow and learn through their years at Christ Community. I pray for the growth of our teachers and staff in the children’s ministry. I am so thankful for the sacrifices they make to love on these kids. I have a strong desire to love them and grow with them as we disciple our children together.

The last part of my vision is to see our children’s ministry having the capability to serve our children in upper elementary at Christ Community. I pray our curriculum always equips instructors with tools to make the gospel transparent but, also fits the developmental and individual needs of our children. I envision our children’s ministry being able to instruct and disciple children of all ages to prepare their hearts and minds for their teenage years in the youth group.  I am praying that we can obtain more people who are willing to serve in this facet of our church to enable us to serve our older children.

My vision is not simple by any means and I have no timeline in mind. My only hope is that God will guide us with grace as he orchestrates the purpose for our children at Christ Community and the children of Athens.

Thank you for allowing me to serve your family. I am thrilled about gaining deeper and more profound relationships with you and your children in the near future.

Wes Cooper goes to Nashville

Read some thoughts from Wes Cooper, member of our Protege team, on his recent trip to Nashville:

Wes pictured on left.

Over the past few years God has given me and strengthened my desire to plant and pastor a church.  On May 26th, Matt Adair and I got up around 3:30 am and drove from Watkinsville to Nashville—yes, from ville to ville.  We got to Nashville early, and Matt and I spent some time catching up with a pastor.  Then we headed to the building where the boot camp was held.

Bryan Loritts, a Lead Pastor through Fellowship Memphis, spoke and painted us a picture of his heart for inner-city churches and African-American leadership within the Church.   Our very own Matt Adair along with several others spoke shortly about the vision God has given them.  It was encouraging to hear what God has put on the hearts of leaders in the Acts 29 Network and the war they wage against Satan as he attempts to put every weapon possible to the heart of their souls: children with leukemia, spouses with terminal illnesses, prodigal children, and more.  These men stood before a large group of men, not to boast of their courage or their work, but to boast in the Lord who is their hope.  They did not leave me remembering their names (I had to look up the ones I told you), but they left me with realities of God’s faithfulness: reminders of how God is good, great, gracious, and glorious.  These are words we have adopted within our local church, but we must not lose their definition, or we risk losing the whole purpose of the alliteration: to remember the amazing God who has invited us into His story of redemption of a sinful humanity.  These men reminded me of this.

We had four speakers total on that Thursday, but it was not the teaching that hit home with me, though it was excellent teaching.  That night, we went to the building a local church meets in and Matt and I hung out with a large group of people.  I met a guy with a heart for racial reconciliation serving the Lord in Charllotesville, Virginia.  I met students from Duke and UNC who loved Jesus and led community groups and helped with host team.  I met guys who had families and had contemplated moving to Athens, Georgia.  I met the whole team of guys from Fellowship Memphis.  I met many different people, whom God used in many different ways to remind me of His love for His children, and his faithfulness.

I came into the trip not really wanting to leave Athens: I was drained physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  I left Nashville Friday morning with Matt encouraged to see and hear of God’s reconciliation across the Southeast.  To quote the genius of High School Musical, it was a reminder that “we are all in this together” as part of the body.  That was my greatest takeaway, and God gave it to me at a time when I felt like I was alone and questioning the effectiveness of my ministry.

SLP Update 2

Here’s an update on what’s happening at Summer Leadership Project from team leader Carly Kurdelmeier:

Greetings from Panama City! We are heading into week four of Summer Leadership Project, which means things are starting to get hard, as everyone is beginning to realize this is not just a summer camp. I love this time of Project because the honeymoon phase has ended and the genuine relationships are starting to show through. It is fun to see two people who, from a worldly perspective, have nothing in common really be able to connect on a deep level solely because of Christ. Through Christ we all have the same inheritance and have an eternal hope to claim, what else could we ask for?! I have been amazed at the community that the Lord has provided for us down here and love seeing Him answer prayers for real community that started way back in December.

I have really been able to see the Lord work through the room leaders that I am discipling and have been so encouraged to see how they are fighting to know the Lord more for themselves as well as the girls in their room. During Dgroup this week we talked about Matthew 28:6 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations”. It was an overwhelming thought that fulfilling this command means a commitment for the rest of our lives to discipleship and selfless service.  Why would the Lord of the universe ask insignificant and sinful people like us to take on a task of this magnitude? Through these thoughts we realized that we aren’t alone in this call, but rather called to go together. We as believers can and should join together in taking the gospel to the nations. What a privilege it is to unite with my fellow brothers and sisters in bringing the world the best news they could ever hear.  The Lord is definitely working and moving in the lives of men and women down here and we have been blessed to see a small glimpse of God’s glory and plan for redemption.

Something you guys can be praying for us is a continued dependence on the Lord and that we may endure, not only for this summer but for the rest of our lives. That we may be on fire for the Lord and commit to this call to go and spread the gospel – “As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news.”

Our Family Is Growing – Katie Crosby

We’ve recently completed membership interviews with several people and I’ve asked some of them to talk about why they’ve become part of the Christ Church family. Here’s Katie Crosby’s story:

I’ve attended CCC for around 3 years now. I’ve literally had commitments each time a membership weekend has occured for the past few years– it pretty much turned into a joke everytime Matt announced the next membership opportunity. Nevertheless, I’ve finally gotten to join, and I couldn’t be happier. Maybe God just wanted to teach me something about perseverance!
Coming into college, I wanted to be a part of a church that was authentic, Gospel-centered, and others focused. I heard about CCC through word of mouth (the Christian community on the UGA campus is surprisingly small) and first attended my freshmen year of college. Everything about the service seemed to radiate the majesty of Christ and to make much of his name. Though it took me a few months to fully commit to regularly attending, deep down I knew this was the church I wanted to call home.
Church is not about a nice and organized service to attend once a week or a gathering to fulfill social needs. The church is God’s beloved instrument to display his glory and worth to a lost world. While CCC is not perfect, I do believe we are a family who is seeking to make much of Jesus. This is ultimately why I joined. I’m excited to see where the LORD guides us in the days ahead as we– by God’s grace– continue to take steps to “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God” (Micah 6:8).
